Audi Ignition Coil Failure Symptoms
The vehicles in the new Audi lineup at Audi Fletcher Jones are precision-engineered to provide superior performance for years to come. However, as with any vehicle, normal wear and tear will eventually require the replacement of certain components. The ignition coil, for example, can fail due to age and usage, moisture damage from fluid leaks, or worn-out spark plugs. Some of the symptoms of a failing ignition coil include:
Difficulty starting the vehicle
Engine misfires or stalls out
The check engine light is on
Backfiring
Rough idling
Loss of power
Reduced fuel economy
The best way to ensure that your Audi is always running at peak performance levels on the roads in and around Irvine and Newport Beach is to keep up to date with scheduled maintenance and inspections. Learn more about your Audi ignition coil in this guide from the experts in the Audi Fletcher Jones service center, and if you suspect there is a problem with your ignition coil, schedule an appointment with us in Costa Mesa today.
What is an Ignition Coil?
The job of an ignition coil is to boost the low voltage that comes from the battery into the high voltage that the spark plugs require to start the vehicle. If the ignition coil fails, the spark plugs won’t receive the high voltage needed to ignite the compressed air-fuel mixture in the combustion chambers, and the vehicle won’t run.
In older engines, the ignition coil output is directed to the cylinders via a distributor, but most newer vehicles feature a coil-on-plug system (COS) in which each cylinder has its own dedicated ignition coil.
How to Test an Ignition Coil
The most common way to test an ignition coil is with a multimeter, which is available at most auto parts stores. A multimeter will measure the primary and secondary winding resistance, which should fall within a specific range depending on the vehicle. Your owner’s manual will have information on the resistance values for your vehicle’s ignition coil. Note that the high voltage generated by an ignition coil is very dangerous and life-threatening. It is extremely important to disconnect the ignition coil completely from the wiring before attempting to test it with a multimeter.
A failing ignition coil may still function intermittently, so additional testing may be required. We recommend that you bring your Audi to our service center and have your ignition system inspected by our experienced technicians. We have access to the most advanced diagnostic tools available and can quickly determine exactly where the problem lies.
