The History of Audi

In 1899, August Horch founded his first automotive group- Horch & Cie. While he built his first car there, a disagreement with the board caused him to leave. At that point, he went on to form a new auto group named Audi. This name came from a Latin translation August's surname of "Horch" or "Hark." As August's last name " Horch" was already trademarked, his business partner suggested the company adopt the Latin translation of his surname, Audi.

Thanks to a streak of wins from 1911 to 1914 in the Austrian Alpine Runs, Audi became internationally known for their performance. While the brand continued to grow, August Horch left the automotive company shortly after the First World War to become an independent automotive expert in Berlin.

Who Makes Audi Today?

Eventually, Audi joined other iconic high-end brands that became part of the Volkswagen Group of German automakers. These brands also include:

  • Bentley
  • Bugatti
  • Lamborghini
  • Porsche

Even though Audi is under the Volkswagen brand, it still holds an individual presence on the market.

Where are Audi Models Produced?

Audi vehicles are manufactured at two different plants in Germany, along with at several other Audi plants around the world. These locations include:

  • Ingolstadt, Germany

  • Neckarsulm, Germany

  • Aurangabad, India
  • Bratislava, Slovakia
  • Brussels, Belgium

How to Say, Audi

Not sure if you're pronouncing "Audi" correctly? Similar to its sister brand Porsche, owners and car enthusiasts want to make sure they're accurately pronouncing the brand name. While you may hear many people saying "AW-dee," Audi is pronounced "OW-dee." This difference may seem minute, but it will distinguish yourself as a true Audi fan.
